Abstract
Student pharmacists are trained to care for every aspect of patients’ lives as a pharmacist. One aspect that is neglected is their spiritual needs. While the various dimensions of wellness are often alluded to, very few medical professionals are trained in how to approach spiritual wellness. Whole person care integrates spirituality into patient care, so that healthcare teams can care for a patient’s emotional, psychological and spiritual needs along with their physical needs. A newly created, student-led professional development program will be offered to student pharmacists, nursing students, pre-professional students, pharmacists and nurses at Ohio Northern University. The training includes how to take a spiritual history, how to assess spiritual needs, and the ethics of spiritual care. The goal is for attendees to be able to explain holistic patient care and learn practical tips for integrating spiritual health into traditional practice. A pre- and post-survey will be administered to attendees to gauge the knowledge gained and evaluate the effectiveness of the training. The survey will assess the attendees’ understanding of whole person care and whether they feel better equipped to assess and address their patients’ spiritual needs. The results from the research are still in progress and will be provided at the presentation.
