Abstract

Blessed with access to a bay from which allowed for an abundance of maritime transportation Sandusky, Ohio was poised for a prosperous future. Raising the question of why did the early promise of an economic powerhouse never occurred. The point of origin of Ohio’s first railroad, it was once suggested that the growth of Sandusky could overtake that of Cleveland. While Sandusky experienced years of growth and prosperity, it did not last, instead the modern city has embraced its title of “vacationland.” Largely relying on a tourism based economy, instead of its more industrial past. While some of the manufacturing and transportation legacy still exist, it is a shadow of its former glory. Unbeknownst to the early developers and investors, advancements in technology removed much of the early benefits of the bay. Where even the bay itself betrayed development, poignantly in its limiting of future maritime activities.
