Abstract

Many high school students enter collegiate engineering programs with no prior knowledge of aircraft or rocket design. High school curriculums also often don’t contain real-life learning examples connecting their conceptual understanding to the real world. In order to help address this problem, a curriculum of packets was developed to help walk students through the processes of aircraft and rocket design. Utilizing both experience and academic resources, modular learning packets were created to walk students through the broader steps of both airplane and rocket design and testing. Materials were also assigned in each appropriate packet for the kids to create their own prototypes. General concepts of physics are reiterated throughout, as well as necessary niche ideas useful to aircraft design. These are done to help reinforce classroom teaching and bring taught ideas to life in a practical sense. Ideally, the packets allow a student to complete the construction of a mathematically correct model of an airplane or rocket.
