Abstract

As an enhancement to my capstone project as the Set Designer for the International Play Festival, I will complete an educational outreach project with Northville High School, where I first discovered my passion for scenic design and technology. Returning to the place where I made the decision to pursue theatre as a career allows me to give back to the program that helped shape my artistic journey while inspiring the next generation of theatre artists. This project aims to help these high school students explore potential next steps in their educational careers by showcasing my work from the International Play Festival and introducing them to the foundational concepts of scenic design while also exploring the unique challenges of designing contemporary plays with abstract concepts, analyzing how plays bring attention to social and political issues, learning about proper cultural research, and the collaborative aspects of the design process. During this event, I will also lead a hands on activity to provide them the opportunity to explore their own creative processes. I hope this project will inspire the students to see scenic design as an accessible, meaningful avenue to share their own perspectives and explore how theatre can reflect and respond to the world around them as they move forward in life. This project not only enhances my capstone by extending the International Play Festival’s themes into the community, but also allows me to give back to the program that first inspired my passion for theatre, fostering creativity and empowering young artists to see scenic design as a powerful form of storytelling.
