Abstract
The design of book cover art across Fantasy novels provides insight into the unique visual languages used to captivate readers. This art plays a pivotal role in the marketing and sales of such novels. Evaluating the recognizable visual differences of cover art provides relevant insights into the aesthetic preferences of each genre's target audience. By understanding these distinctions in such an art form, publishers can effectively communicate the substance of a novel and attract readers who seek immersive experiences within their favorite genres.
I will be using marketing and ethnographic research strategies to understand how book cover art can impact book sales. I will also be conducting a literature review. A questionnaire will gauge consumer opinions, and will hopefully aid in determining what compels a reader to pick up a certain book. I will also utilize self-ethnography to find which books are put on display. I can then collect images of physical books along with online images. I can then also assess how I, as a reader, find which books visually appeal to me. The final tactic that will be used is a communications audit. I will be looking at the most popular books from the fantasy genre in an attempt to find the most common art and marketing themes. This will help in finding which cover styles the general public values more.
