Abstract

Background: Transgender patients pose a challenge to healthcare professionals who have received no training in this specific patient population. With guidelines driven largely by patient goals and satisfaction, clinicians need to listen intently to how their patients feel and include their patient in making decisions about their care. The majority of pharmacy students do not receive a comprehensive education on transgender healthcare, if this underserved population is addressed in the curriculum at all. Objective: To fill in the gaps in pharmacy curriculum to cover transgender healthcare on an elective basis for students who feel this knowledge area is important to their comprehensive education. Methods: At the conclusion of this project, a sixteen-week course will be outlined with assignments and knowledge assessments to create practice-ready, competent PharmD candidates to improve the accessibility of transgender care. Students who complete this course will have met learning objectives covering medication therapy, the types and stages of transition that people experience, and auxiliary healthcare services transgender patients may need. Further Directions: This course curriculum is still in the development process. A next step will be to begin testing out the curriculum in a classroom. Opening the curriculum to the academic community will allow the greatest impact on the most students. A limitation of this work is that no students have been through the course at this time.
