Abstract

Problem: Since 2018, college student retention rates have declined to 61.1%. With a national shortage of nurses, nursing schools are seeking ways to improve retention rates. Research shows that there is a relation between improving satisfaction and improved retention, yet there is little evidence on how to improve satisfaction. When nursing students feel like they belong and are included in programs, their satisfaction increases. Involvement in student nursing organizations may be one method to increase belonging and inclusion.

Purpose: The purpose of this project is to compare nursing student perceptions of inclusivity and belonging prior to and following involvement in nursing student organizations.

Methods: A quasi-experimental design was used for this project. Nursing students enrolled at a rural university during the 2023-2024 school year completed a pre-survey. The survey used a 5-point likert scale and participants were asked questions regarding their feelings of belonging and inclusion in the nursing program. Based on the pre-survey results, activities were planned and implemented for two different nursing student organizations. After implementing the activities, nursing students completed a post-survey to measure feelings of belonging and inclusion of the nursing students in the organizations.

Results: Preliminary results indicate a significant finding that membership in one nursing organization over the other did influence belonging and inclusion. Post-survey results are currently being analyzed.

Conclusion: Through involvement in nursing organizations, students gain a sense of belonging and inclusion in the nursing program which will ultimately help retention rates and prepare students for professional careers.
