Abstract
“Forensic Sketch Artists: The Face Behind the Sketch”, investigates the field of Forensic Sketch Artists and their role in catching serial killers. Forensic Sketch Artists use their artistic skills to create police sketches or 3D models to help the police force identify potential killers.
It is valuable to have artistic abilities, though these professionals must have the knowledge and skills required to create as accurate a sketch as possible. To understand the field of Forensic Sketch Artists, it is essential to understand what exactly goes into making the sketch and how it can make or break a case.
To understand what makes the sketch, I will be looking into the skills and knowledge that these professionals need, how they gather information from witnesses and the advantages and disadvantages of the field. I will investigate two serial killer cases where a police sketch was used, Rodney Alcala: The Dating Game Killer and The Zodiac Killer. By looking at these cases I will identify the sketches creation and how it was either successful or unsuccessful in catching the serial killer. The field of forensic sketch artists is a valuable resource to the police force that can help lead to the culprit behind the murder.
