Abstract
The Rise of Virtual Nursing
Problem: There is an increased demand for nursing professionals in hospitals and other healthcare facilities. Increased workload and high demand can lead to nursing burnout. To decrease the nursing workload of bedside nurses and nurse burnout, non-bedside nursing staff need to be part of the care team. Non-bedside, virtual nursing is a new method to reduce primary nurse workload. Virtual nurses assist the bedside nurse by participating in the patient admission and discharge process, performing hourly rounding, and completing care plans and patient education.
Purpose: The purpose of this research is to compare nurse satisfaction prior to and following implementation of virtual nursing.
Methods: This longitudinal descriptive quantitative study will measure nurse satisfaction and burnout prior to and 3 months following the implementation of virtual nursing on an ICU step-down unit. The impact of virtual nurse implementation, nurse satisfaction, and burnout will be measured using a 3-part survey.
Conclusion: It is expected that bedside nurses will have increased satisfaction following the implementation of virtual nursing care. With the help of new technologies, virtual nursing can improve bedside nurses' work environment and patient care.
Keywords: virtual nursing, nursing workload, nurse burnout, increasing nurse satisfaction, increasing innovative models.
