Abstract

The role of political polarization’s effect on voter turnout has been the subject of much research and debate. There has been the recent addition of Generation Z to the mass of eligible voters. This brings rise to the question of how does political polarization affect voter turnout in Generation Z? Past literature that reflects how older generations were affected by polarization determine what factors will be considered when examining Generation Z’s propensity to vote. These include levels of education and political sophistication/awareness. I posit that political polarization can have both an adverse and beneficial effect on voter turnout among Generation Z. I designed a survey for students at Ohio Northern University in search of an answer to my research question.
