Abstract

Vortex generators are commonly used devices to control the flow over an airfoil or other surface. In this paper the effect of differing placements of vortex generators on a wind turbine airfoil, compared to an airfoil without vortex generators, were simulated using computational fluid dynamics(CFD). It was shown that, in some instances, the application of vortex generators effectively controlled the flow over the airfoil to increase the power produced by the wind turbine. According to the CFD results, the application of vortex generators at an angle increased the lift produced, as well as delaying the separation of the boundary layer.
