Abstract
Problem: Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP) is the leading cause of death of all hospital acquired infections. VAP bundles have been researched and utilized throughout hospitals. However, there is a gap that exists between physical practice and knowledge.
Purpose: This proposed study aims to implement a checklist based VAP Bundle into the ICU to increase nurse adherence to bundle and thereby decrease rates of VAP.
Methods: This project is a three phase quasi-experimental research design taking place in an ICU. The first phase is a retrospective data collection over five months. The second phase will take place over two months. This phase will introduce staff nurses to the bundle checklist as well as an educational session on how to complete bundle components. The third phase would be a post intervention data collection over five months.
Evaluation: The data will be analyzed through a chart audit. VAP Bundle component completion as well as VAP occurrence will be analyzed. The retrospective chart audit will be conducted on sixty patients on mechanical ventilation during the five months. Criteria will be outlined as what should be counted as a “yes” (criteria met) and “no” (not met). The same chart audit process will be conducted on the post intervention group. Incidence of VAP will be measured pre and post intervention according to CDC guidelines.
Conclusion: This proposed study will reveal the relationship between checklist-based bundles and the impact on nurse’s adherence and the incidence of VAP. By educating and creating an organized approach it will allow delivery of care to be improved and thereby improve patient outcomes.
