Abstract

Plastic plays an integral part in everyone’s lives, but our consumption of it has created a worldwide problem. Plastic litters the ocean, streams and everything in between. Many people make an effort to recycle, but the reality is there are lots of complications with plastic recycling. These issues include the limited uses of recycled plastics, the large energy and financial cost to do this recycling, the small number of materials that can actually be recycled, and a lack of education on recycling in general. This presentation will look at how plastics are made, and how their pollution is impacting the environment. It will also discuss how plastics are currently recycled, and the newer enzymatic and hydrothermal pyrolysis methods.
