Abstract

Problem: Workplace bullying is more common in nursing than any other occupation. Workplace bullying in nursing can cause psychological stress, burnout, and has an overall negative effect on patient care. Cognitive rehearsal may be one method to reduce the bullying in the workplace.

Aims: The purpose of this quality improvement study is to determine if cognitive rehearsal education for nurses in the hospital setting reduces the prevalence of workplace bullying compared to no intervention.

Methods: This quality improvement project will be a quasi-experimental design. The sample for this study will include 26 nurses from different units in a rural hospital. Nurse participants will receive a lecture and cognitive rehearsal education. Nurse participants will complete the Workplace Incivility Index pre and post intervention.

Conclusion: Cognitive rehearsal has been shown to decrease workplace bullying in nursing. Teaching nurses how to use cognitive rehearsal could lead to decreased incivility in this rural hospital, reduce psychological stress and burnout, and improve patient care.
