Abstract

Problem: Nurses across the nation are being affected by an epidemic that often leads to severe, chronic pain. This is not an infectious disease, but mass amounts of preventable musculoskeletal injuries caused by repetitive movements such as lifting, repositioning, and transferring patients. These injuries lead to time away from work and increased costs for healthcare facilities. Education on proper lifting techniques provides nurses with the tools to reduce risk for injury.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine if reeducating nurses about proper lifting techniques reduces the occurrence of musculoskeletal injuries.

Methods: This study will be a cross sectional, quasi-experimental design. Outcomes will be measured before and after the intervention and there is no comparison group. A test will be administered prior to a proper lifting training program and once again after the education and training have been completed. The test will be a 5-point Likert scale that will consist of questions in relation to workplace safety, feelings about personal safety, understanding of education, and confidence in personal abilities. Additionally, the incidence of nurse injury will be measured prior to and following education.

Conclusion: Participants will gain knowledge regarding safe patient handling which will reduce their risk of experiencing a workplace injury. This will lead to reduced costs for healthcare facilities.
