Abstract
Michael Rush, PharmD, MBA examines vaccine hesitancy by highlighting 3 milestone vaccines (smallpox, rabies, and polio) and the ways in which society reacted to the controversial nature of the introduction of these vaccines to the public. The stories shared focus more on the human element than the science behind the innovation. These historical examples are relevant to the current COVID-19 pandemic where society's reaction to the virus and vaccine are not all that different from their reactions to past vaccine events, even though technology and policy have both made tremendous advancements since the earlier milestones.
