Abstract

Students at Ohio Northern University have the unique opportunity of having an established relationship with Vancrest of Ada, an assisted living facility located a short drive from the university. Many of the residents of long-term care facilities, like Vancrest of Ada, have some type of cognitive impairment. Music and music therapy is known to have many positive impacts on those living with Alzheimer’s Dementia. While evidence shows that the memory benefits of music often come from listening to familiar pieces, there is no mistaking the value of the impact on a patient’s quality of life from listening to group performances. This is a great area of impact that the students of ONU can participate in. While ONU is known for many of its STEM colleges and programs and their associated outreach, it also has a School of Visual and Performing Arts which can greatly benefit the community through performance. The ONU Flute Choir is a growing ensemble with student performers from across multiple disciplines and colleges. Through the selection of musical pieces and the subsequent practice and performance, the ONU Flute Choir is able to have a positive impact on those residing in assisted living facilities and, more specifically, those who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Dementia or any other form of memory impairment.
